MY EXPERIENCE WITH ANCESTRY.COM

Growing up you get to know some of the coolest and even maybe unusual things from your family. You go visit grandma and grandpa and they tell you some of the adventures they had and stories from their own past generations that they were told once too. You really think you know it all…. until you take an ancestry DNA test!

I had the pleasure to work with Ancestry.com this year and I am honestly shocked with my results! My family is Mexican American and I already had an idea of where my ancestors came from according to my grandparents stories. My moms side of the family are Spaniards and my dads side of the family are Mexican but that’s as far back as I knew.

The Ancestry DNA kit comes in a small box with the items you need to send your saliva sample in. After you send it, you receive your results in 6-8 weeks online on your Ancestry.com account. The whole process was so easy, simple, and so exciting! It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done to get to know more about me.

When I got my DNA kit I was a little nervous to find out what my roots were. I know all human kind is mixed from all of our ancestors since the beginning of time. We all came from different types of slavery that mixed with people from different regions in our histories wars. We are all one of the same, our physical appearance is what makes us actually stand out and makes us so unique and that also makes us feel like we are what we look like… and we are so wrong. These were my results:

Native American 51%
North America, Central America, South America

Iberian Peninsula 17%
Spain, Portugal

Europe South 12%
Italy, Greece

Great Britain 6%
England, Scotland, Wales

European Jewish 2%
Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Hungary, Israel

Africa North 2%
Morocco, Western Sahara, Algeria, Libya

Middle East 2%
Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, Yemen,
United Arab Emirates (UAE), Lebanon, Israel

Nigeria 2%

Scandinavia 1%

Africa South-Central Hunter-Gatherers 1%

Caucasus 1%

Ireland/Scotland/Wales 1%

Africa Southeastern Bantu 1%

Asia Central 1%

After looking at my results I was shocked to know I had parts from all over the world in my DNA. I was able to share all of this information with my family and it was so nice to see all of us connect and talk about how it all came to happen and where each one could have came from. I really had so much fun doing this test and I recommend it to anyone who wants to feel more connected with their ancestors. This is also a test I strongly encourage for adopted children and adults.
